A fun day in Cabo... yes it was, but with a mishap that will cause me to reflect long afterward. Each year, while on our holiday, we like to try one new thing. This year our new adventure was an afternoon quad tour. A van took us to our location about 45 min from Cabo. We received a bandana, helmet & brief instruction of gears & leavers. While trying to get those gears figured out, I was offered an automatic... now, sometimes being offered a 'girl's easy way out' might hurt my feelings, this seemed a kind offer & was most welcomed by me. We were off... a bit slower than our companions (our group numbered 6), but ok. The path was rocky, steep sometimes & required a bit of strategy with regard to speed & where best to steer my machine. It was fun, challenging & when we stopped for a short break, I asked if we had slowed the group down too much? Mexicans are kind & our 3 Brazilian travelling companions gracious... our leader's response: 'you're ok... we've seen worse'. That may not be much of a compliment, but all seemed pleased with our company as together we journeyed.
When we arrived at a beautiful beach, we were given an hour & a half to explore pathways, hills, trails & beach area. We were told to stay out of the water & wet sand areas. This we could do! We made our way back & forth, up & down, gaining confidence & a bit of speed. So fun... I took pictures until Ed commented, 'were we here to take pictures or ride?' Then ride we did.
When our time concluded, we began our trip back to the base... a bit more confident, pleased with a bit more speed. The day was warm, my bandana had slipped down. I wore my helmet, but not my goggles. We were just heading back... There were a few times where one had to decide on which part of the trail to travel. There were definitely tougher & easier course options. I was cautious in a risky sort of way... or so I thought.
Then a curve, (now looking back) with a bit too much speed. I lost some control & then probably pushed on the gas lever instead of the break. I headed up, off the trail, through some cactus toward a barbed wire fence. It happened so quickly. I remember the wire hitting my upper arms, pain, the wire brushing along my chest & neck. A line wire mark remains where my necklace falls but no puncture wounds. I was tipped backward. The wire caught my ankle area. I lost my shoe & the quad came to a halt... probably because it's driver was tipped off the machine & could no longer grip its levers.
Bleeding & scared, I found my shoe, waved Ed down (he was coming behind me) & help was on its way. One of our Brazilian travelling companions identified himself as a doctor. He was actually a neurosurgeon; who while bandaging me shared that in his work, he didn't usually deal with emergencies. An ambulance was sent back & I shared with onlookers... yes, a spectacle I was causing... that I was ok. The company owner phoned while on our way back to Cabo wanting to know details. I shared info, how foolish I felt & that it was still a fun day. As advised I purchased a tetnus shot & felt thankful.
I've now removed two of the three bandaged areas... 2 down, one to go. That one will take a little longer, but all seem to be healing well.
As I look at the tear on my shirt, where the wire tore my shirt but not me, I'm amazed. That the wire went over my head without touching my face, is hard to understand. I wish I could see a replay. For God's care, I am thankful & placing a doctor within reach meant much. My throat still feels sore where the wire pressed, but didn't puncture. WE SERVE A GREAT GOD & I am most thank... understand all of His plan(s) I don't, but trust Him I do!!!
